Unhinged retro-futurism from another dimension. Henge are curtain-chewing mad and proud of it. Ostensibly from Manchester, they’re really four interplanetary beings known as Zpor, Goo, Grok and Nom, and their third album is a mind-boggling serving of their self-styled “cosmic dross”. While its predecessors were equally barmy, Alpha Test 4 comes across as a more focused exercise in boundary-spurning songcraft. Opener Get A Wriggle On is an unapologetic Cardiacs tribute, but played on some souped-up facsimile of a broken Casio keyboard. Similarly, Self Repair Protocol has a strong whiff of Tim Smith’s much-missed genius about it, but here those chordal twists and melodic turns are performed by a cross between mid-80s Devo and Kraftwerk on helium.
