US studio progger raids the vaults for inspiration. Sometimes it takes looking back to go forward. Ethan J Matthews, the one-man show that is Portland, Oregon’s Echo Us, has returned to a trilogy of his early albums to source material for his seventh long-player. Inland Empire uses musical ideas that never made the cut on 2009’s The Tide Decides, Tomorrow Will Tell The Story (2012) and 2014 release II: XII, A Priori Mamoriae. But as such it sounds more like what it is – a clutch of promising musical ideas that only intermittently gel together into coherent pieces. Beguiling passages will make the listener prick up their ears: digitised voice, symphonic swells and sprinkles of tingling electric piano make for a bewitching introduction on Across The Star, before the spoken-word…
