Prog metal powerhouse delivers another knockout. Four years on from his solo debut What The Water Wants, Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder returns with a second impressive album under his own name. II reunites Alder with FW touring guitarist Mike Adbow, alongside guitarist/bassist Tony Hernando and drummer Craig Anderson. Where the previous release felt like a conscious departure from the prog metal territory of Fates Warning, II embraces a darker, heavier vibe. Alder himself combines the heartfelt delivery of Steve Perry with the iron-throated power of Graham Bonnet. Lyrically, however, he’s in a distinctly sombre mood. He sings of ‘sinking into emptiness’ in The Hands Of Time, ‘crawling through the nothing’ in Waiting For Some Sun, and laments ‘I am already broken’ in My Oblivion.
