Assured debut from Tapio Ylinen’s new Finnish prog quartet. Guitarist/singer Tapio Ylinen has released albums under his own name and as part of jazz group Mortality. On this self-titled debut, his new quartet 5th Season dive into the pool of golden-era prog and classic rock. Ten-minute opener In Memoriam sees Ylinen, bassist Mikko Löytty, keyboardist Arto Piispanen and drummer Jani Auvinen navigating a dramatic, melancholy instrumental landscape. Ylinen’s pleasant voice suits bright, driving pop-rocker In Daylight and the fragile Moodies-like acoustic moment I Am The Waves, enhanced by gorgeous Hackett-esque lead playing. The second part of the courageously titled On The Dark Side Of The Moon is pretty proggy, but the first is less Floyd, more Fleetwood Mac.
