The original Seasons End album cover has been given a refresh for the new deluxe edition – but why, exactly, did the band feel it was necessary?

Seasons End was a transitional record for Marillion, right down to their decision to stop working with longtime collaborator Mark Wilkinson. The new album cover was created by artist Bill Smith and stood in stark contrast to previous Marillion artwork, albeit with a few knowing self-references to keep the fans happy. “Looking back at the art, as it was originally, it was a bit of a compromise, a kind of hotch-potch,” says Mark Kelly today. “We were trying a bit too hard to have that continuity between the old and the new Marillion.
