As revealed during the new documentary Seasons Change, the recordings for Seasons End at Hook End Manor were occasionally interrupted by tomfoolery. For reasons unknown, Marillion’s downtime was spent making small hot air balloons.
“Yeah, it was!” says Pete Trewavas. “We’re easily distracted as musicians. In the evenings, to wind down, I don’t even know who suggested it – it might have been Nick Davis, or maybe Mark Kelly – but there was something about how to make the kind of candles [lanterns] that the Chinese float up at New Year. So we’d use some balsa wood or coffee stirrers or whatever, and put a plastic bag and a tea light candle in the frame, and it would float away.”
