And the melancholy hum that runs through many of their pieces, whether it’s the epics or the quieter miniatures, echoes that which coloured the Genesis period of A Trick Of The Tail and Wind And Wuthering. Yet the wry chuckle with which Garvey offers this is also key to Elbow’s appeal. A big, cheery, sentimental bear of a performer, he knows that an audience as vast as the band’s 27-year career has assembled requires more than one mood on a night out in an arena. At one point he’s leading the crowd in chants of “Way-oh!” and “Woah-ooh!”, like a more casually attired Freddie Mercury at Live Aid.…
