“We’ve had issues with various album covers,” says Mark Kelly when the subject of the striking Marbles artwork comes up. He and Steve Hogarth had a falling out over the giant Christ the Redeemer statue that was originally fêted for the cover of Afraid Of Sunlight – Kelly initially worried that it gave off Christian rock overtones – and it subsequently became the fluorescent Jesus featured on the cover on the 2019 reissue. But that’s a story for another time. “When Carl [Glover] showed us that it was like the first time we saw Brave, instantly, it was like, ‘Yep, that’s the one.’” Like Brave, an album that ventured into very dark places in strange and beautiful ways, Marbles confounded the listener.
