Historical themes lay at the heart of Proximity & Chance.

British prog songwriter John Holden has explained how the themes of his fifth album, Proximity & Chance have been drawn from real historical stories and the result of“falling down rabbit holes” in pursuit of intriguing tales. Burnt Cork And Limelight relates the story of Victorian actor William Terris from the point of view of his assassin, a disgruntled former protégé, while Agents is based on the 2018 Salisbury poisonings. “Putin was just pushing the West – I’m fascinated by the concept of megalomania,” says Holden.
