Five bands that wouldn’t exist without Porcupine Tree.

RIVERSIDE It took a few albums for Poland’s most revered modern prog band to completely shake off the spectre of Porcupine Tree’s era-defining sound. Leader Mariusz Duda certainly doesn’t want anyone to dub him “the Polish Steven Wilson”. So we won’t. THE PINEAPPLE THIEF With Gavin Harrison currently playing drums for both bands, Porcupine Tree and The Pineapple Thief seem inextricably linked. Thanks to Bruce Soord’s love of an elegant melody set to wildly dynamic, left-field rock, certain musical similarities are hard to deny. HAKEN Although arguably more traditional in many ways than their British prog forebears, the London lads’ finessed amalgam of old-school songwriting and maximalist metal work owes an obvious debt to Porcupine Tree’s early 21st-century output.
