Those who have marvelled at Blood Incantation’s astonishing Absolute Elsewhere will be similarly flabbergasted by Bedsore. Formerly a highly creative death metal band, the Italians have fully embraced old-school prog on their second album, Dreaming The Strife For Love (20 Buck Spin). Extreme elements are still a vital part of their sound, but this is a prog album from top to toe. Based on Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, an allegorical fantasy written by Dominican priest Francesco Colonna, first published in 1499, Bedsore’s newly enlightened brutality bravely wades into dark prog territory and proudly stays there, as vicious riffing and fusty, analogue keyboards collide in an explosion of fervently oddball ingenuity.
