Drama and bombast as long-lost Germans re-emerge from the wilderness. Sixteen years have slipped by since Everon’s last album, 2008’s North. Shells sees the reunification of the line-up that recorded that album, namely vocalist Oliver Philipps, bass player Schymy, guitarist Ulli Hoever and drummer Christian ‘Moschus’ Moos. Sadly, Moos passed away having completed eight of the tracks here, so Jason Gianni, who has recorded with Neal Morse and Trans-Siberian Orchestra, finished the remainder of the album. “They’ve lost none of their passion or power.” Musically, Shells sees Everon pick up right where they left off. Opener No Embrace sets the mood, combining catchy melodies with sweeping grandiosity. The production is bright and very modern, with a mix that pushes everything right to the front.
