Richard Butterworth SONICBOND
Sonicbond’s seemingly limitless On Track series works equally well as an authoritative reference book and entertaining toilet read. Richard Butterworth’s walk through the career of the biggest of prog’s big beasts is digestible yet perceptive, his evident love of the band balanced by sharp insights and snappy writing (he memorably describes 1977’s bilious Animals as “an album full of wrathful anthropomorphs”).
With no new interviews, Butterworth is forced to lean heavily on existing sources, though all but the most hardcore Floyd-heads won’t be aware that Paul McCartney nearly ended up as one of the voices on The Dark Side Of The Moon opener Speak To Me or the fact that producer Bob Ezrin unsuccessfully lobbied the band to incorporate rap into 1987’s A Momentary Lapse Of Reason.…
