Marvellous Realms/Stupid/Serious SONOLUXE
Emerging from “another intensive, almost perpetual, recording session”, these two releases represent Bill Nelson’s 122nd and 123rd albums.
The brand-new Marvellous Realms finds Nelson sounding ageless and timeless. The Weather Song marries the Yorkshire obsession with meteorology with Nelson’s sweetly ambient pop, with a great refrain and that guitar. Some Jiggery Pokery is sweet Django Reinhardt-style jazz. The Mystic has a beautiful chorus which sounds like high-era Be-Bop.
To complement Marvellous Realms, Stupid/Serious is one of several albums Nelson recorded from 2016 to 2020. Its 17 tracks swing between light and dark, psychedelia and avant-rock. Silver Rain (Marooned In A Fairytale) could soundtrack a stop-motion film of a blooming flower, while Stupid Stupid (Deep And Serious) references the Peter Gunn theme, Jive Talkin’ and Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow.…
