Viimaa SVART RECORDS Doubling down on the winning krautrock slant of 2015’s self-titled debut LP, Viimaa is just as sophisticated as its predecessor. Following a brooding prelude Taustamusiikkia Matelijoille, the multipart Varma Kuolema is like a sinister take on mid-70s Camel or and gutsy instrumentation, with sleek rhythmic changes and impassioned musicianship and chemistry. The remaining songs follow the same formula but with enough variation to give each one its own identity. That’s particularly true with the track’s mix of psychedelic guitar work, mournful keys, and tribal sax/percussion combinations, and Raskaan Sarjan Viheltäjä’s use of noisy feedback and metal-adjacent chaos. The quirkiest moments come from the penultimate Kuilun a playful rocker that juxtaposes fiery jamming and dreamy respites.
