III KARISMA Brazil’s premier old school prog rock trio are on blistering form on their third album. Still firmly entrenched in a kaleidoscopic soup of spiralling organ riffs, bubbling modular synths, lithe melodic bass runs and athletic, jazzy drumming, these seven new songs are too energetic and inventive to be mere perfect blasts from the distant past. Fuelled by samba rhythms and the dark side of Brazilian psych, Castelos Do Céu and the darkly convoluted Sonhos Medievais offer controlled chaos at its best. Mandala is five minutes of Canterbury-via-Zappa melodic eccentricity, and Ciclos offers three-and-a-half minutes of odd acid pop. Throughout it all, David Paiva, Elcio Cáfaro and Ronaldo Rodrigues are shared chemistry personified.
