TODD RUNDGREN

Every month we get inside the mind of one of the biggest names in music. This issue it’s Todd Rundgren. The former Nazz guitarist launched his own successful solo career in the 70s before founding prog group Utopia in 1973. Aside from making his own music, Rundgren has also worked as a producer – his credits include XTC and Meat Loaf – and he was an early adopter and promoter of the internet and digital distribution platforms. Now aged 74, his latest release and 26th solo album, Space Force, finds him collaborating with a host of big names including Sparks, Adrian Belew and Steve Vai. Prog caught up with him to discuss the past, present and future.

Much like a hare darting around a misty field in the pale dawn light, Todd Rundgren can be incredibly difficult to pin down. Ever since his earliest days in the late 60s as guitarist of the Yardbirds-influenced psych rockers the Nazz, Rundgren has rarely hung around in one particular musical corner for too long. A naturally curious musician and autodidact intrigued to see what the form can offer, he’s spent most of his career effortlessly slipping in and out of various genres that have included power pop, garage rock, electronic music and, of course, prog with his former band Utopia.
