Former Nightwish bassist-vocalist Marko Hietala has described his second solo album Roses From The Deep as a “musical fusion reactor of the decades” as he and his band make mosaics from a wide rang of influences. Released on February 7 via Nuclear Blast, it’s described as more “rock focused” than its “atmospheric” predecessor – 2020’s Pyre Of The Black Heart – as Hietala and his band lean into a collaborative writing process. “We originally discussed the band having its own name,” he admits. “Without my bandmates the album would be completely different, and much less adventurous.” Augmented by guitarist Tuomas Wäinölä, keys player Vili Ollila and “Finland’s most recorded drummer” Anssi Nykänen, the group have woven together different sonic eras, making 70s shock rock and modern prog bedfellows.
