The evening begins with Robin A Smith at the piano playing a theme from Tubular Bells II, and he’s gradually joined by seven other musicians who journey together through themes from Ommadawn and Return To Ommadawn. When he first speaks to the audience, he has to work to get a reaction – it’s like they’ve been settling into a chamber music recital, which he’s interrupted. The energy level in the room rises when bass guitarist Lisa Featherston sings Moonlight Shadow, with harmonies by Daisy Bevan, followed by guitarist Jay Stapley singing Family Man. Smith’s collaboration with Mike Oldfield dates back to 1999’s The Millennium Bell and the ensemble play his own composition The Gem, a tribute to Oldfield, which fits in well. It introduces a…
