Sel Balamir and Matt Brobin discover the art of silent recording to return bigger than ever.

“If you’re a purist, look away,” warns Sel Balamir. Ready to bust eardrums on April 4 via Rockosmos Records, Amplifier’s Gargantuan is loud, cosmic, and expansive – yet was recorded very, very quietly. Singer-guitarist Balamir and drummer Matt Brobin created the album in The Old Forge, a former smithy, in an idyllic hamlet in Sussex. “I couldn’t really make a load of noise,” says Balamir. “It just wouldn’t be possible in a small village without waking everyone up at two o’clock in the morning. So, I had to find a way of working on my monitors and headphones. I ended up getting rid of all my amplifiers and getting little zero-watt amplifiers, and Matt switched to electronic drums.” The duo had samples of Brobin’s acoustic drum kit that they’d captured…
