Pace LOVERS & LOLLYPOPS Portuguese riff explorers risk getting lost in space. For Solar Corona’s third full-length album, the trio of Rodrigo Carvalho on guitar and synths, drummer Peter Carvalho and bassist José Roberto Gomes are joined by Nuno Loureiro, whose role is described as ‘dubmechanic’. The result is an uneven affair. At its best, Pace serves up vigorous space rock jams, but it’s punctuated by abstract pieces lacking form and structure. Heavy Metal Salts begins with an unadorned drumbeat, before Gomes’ growling bass and Carvalho’s angry buzzing guitar enter the frame. They’re in no hurry, happy to loop around the same idea, but once they start to dig into the groove they soon gather weight and momentum.
