Ruins FREIA MUSIC Dutch post-rock project’s third doubles down on the despondency. Since they debuted with 2015’s Tides, the addition of a guitarist has reinforced the potency of noise architects Downriver Dead Men Go. But on their third album they spend long periods on the more understated side of the quiet-loud axis. And that results in them leaving the listener waiting too long for the anticipated storm to break – if it does at all. On Ruins’ opening title track, they have fine-tuned their sound to the point where the crescendous moments resemble awesome sonic avalanches to envelop the ears. But if that gives the impression that more immersive sonic superstructures are likely to loom up, it’s not entirely the case. Songs such as Secret have an initially alluring minor…
