When filmmakers are producing a sequel to a blockbuster, the old adage declares that the audience want to see “the same thing, but different”. An identical principle applies when curating a line-up with two headliners. On paper, Amorphis and Eluveitie both fall into a microgenre that mixes progressive music, folk and metal, yet the ways they go about their goals are a hemisphere apart.
For Eluveitie, there’s no line-up too giant, no instrument too esoteric and no melody too bombastic for them to use during their style-smashing mission. That overindulgence has obviously resonated, since Kentish Town’s O2 Forum is crammed to the rafters by the time the band seize the stage at 8pm. The scope of what’s about to unfold becomes apparent…
