Much like tonight’s venue, which hosts its first prog gig since its a six-month refurbishment, Elder have gone through something of a glow up. The works may have been essential for the venue, but for the Massachusetts outfit, their sonic revitalisation has been voluntary. Their doom rock roots remain apparent – support acts Steak and Slomasa are proof of that – but their flirtations with prog and psych rock have helped push the genre to less predictable and ultimately more colourful places. Tonight’s set attempts to straddle the line between the two worlds their audience come from.
