Currently touring for their 35th anniversary, these Chilean proggers reveal how musical traditions infuse their music.

Even before they’d released a note of music, Chile’s Tryo found themselves opening for prog royalty, Yes at the Quinta Vergara Amphitheater in Viña del Mar. “It was a big honour!” beams bandmanager Ignacio Carvajal Gómez. It was also the culmination of seven years’ hard work. Formed in 1987 in the Chilean port city of Valparaíso by brothers Ismael and Francisco Cortez Aguilera on guitars and bass respectively, and drummer Félix Carbonne Kind (recently replaced by his protégé Felipe Baldrich Maldonado), the group found success on the college circuit before releasing their eponymous debut album in 1996. Since then, the band – now augmented by keyboardist Pablo Martínez Rodríguez – have released a further six albums, the most recent of which, Suramérica, came out earlier this year.
