‘Amplified history’ proponents return with more music from The Ancients.
With Viking blockbuster The Northman pulling in $70 million at the box office, it’s clear there’s a growing appetite for pagan ritual, glistening flesh and all things ancient. And as anyone who’s seen Heilung live can attest, the band check all those boxes. They’re a hypnotic, hallucinatory, occasionally bewildering experience.
Third studio album Drif is a more muted affair, and less easy to get lost in, but the live set’s slow creep towards climax is effectively captured on Tenet, and Buslas Bann, with chanted, throat-sung vocals and primitive, churning rhythms providing an almost maddening lift. Less patient listeners might struggle with Keltentrauer (‘Celtic mourning’), eight minutes of spoken German set over the backdrop of what sounds like a berserker training camp. Nesso…
