Radical reimagining of Irish post-rockers’ debut LP. God Is An Astronaut’s second album, All Is Violent, All Is Bright, was their breakthrough, but their debut The End Of The Beginning was more biographically significant. Intended as a goodbye in the face of failure, it instead garnered them a cult following. Now, 20 years later, they’ve reworked it as a live-in-the-studio album. The original leaned into electronic music out of necessity: GIAA were a duo sampling keys and drums with an AKAI S3000 sampler, and at the time, the influence of drum’n’bass and trip hop was writ large. The Beginning Of The End, by contrast, is a rock record played by a full band, meaning the textures and instrumentation are completely different.
