IN TRIBUTE TO COLOSSEUM’S BARBARA THOMPSON MBE.
Jazz rock saxophonist and flautist Barbara Thompson MBE died on July 9 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was 77. Born on July 27, 1944 in Oxford, Thompson studied at the Royal College Of Music in the 1960s and began making her name on the UK jazz scene through her work with New Jazz Orchestra, Bill Le Sage Trio and John Dankworth. Later she worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber, and earned acclaim in the contemporary classical field. Her Saxophone Concerto was debuted by the Freiburg Festival Orchestra in 1988 and, in 1995, her Rhythm Of The Gods piece was performed by a group of musicians including modern percussion great, Evelyn Glennie.
