SWEET BILLY PILGRIM TAKE TO THE CITY
A critics’ favourite since 2009’s Mercury Prize-nominated LP Twice Born Men, English band Sweet Billy Pilgrim remain a hard act to categorise. The press release for Somapolis – their sixth album, due on November 4 through Republic Of Media – bills them as “progressive art-pop”, which seems to fit with their eclectic, acclaimed style. A concept album, Somapolis weaves together stories from an imagined city, opening with two artists tasked with observing, curating and commemorating the world around them. As multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Jana Carpenter tells Prog: “By removing stories from yourself and telling them in the context of an imagined space and city, it allows for quite a wide range of expression.” Carpenter is joined on the album by the band’s founding member Tim Elsenburg.
