A ride back to the early days of the Brummie pomp rock veterans. Considering the often magical nature of their music, Magnum deserved better than being tied to hard-nut Black Sabbath manager Don Arden’s Jet Records. The label kept its purse-strings tightly shut, either sitting on their work for extreme lengths of time, as with 1982’s Chase The Dragon, or forcing them to self-produce their records before being quite ready to do so. Eventually, Magnum faked splitting up to escape the label’s clutches. Though an unspoken sense of ‘what if?’ clouds the atmosphere of their five Jet-era albums – four studio and one live – collected in this CD box set, the music itself is, for the most part, outstanding and sometimes even breathtaking.
