Norfolk percussionist turns synth leviathan in lockdown.
Joe Burns is best known as the drummer for Norwich-based prog fivepiece Guranfoe, a group that have made a name for themselves for the impressive improvisational telepathy the members appear to have in the live arena.
Burns is an intuitive musician and percussionist, and his new side-project Vonn Zandus proves that there’s more than one string to his bow. With time on his hands during the pandemic, Burns got busy with a Moog Sub 37 synthesiser, beginning to experiment and make home recordings of compositions. Organically that grew into Unimortal, his first solo record, featuring odd time signatures, marimbas, glockenspiels, tambourines and even a gong. Only Latrominu, which wraps up the first suite abruptly, bears another musician (Rob Baker on guitar).
