The third album from Scaphoid – aka Austin, Texas native Matt Hobart – is a collection of enticing contrasts and broad sonic palettes. These instrumental songs often juxtapose heavy, drop-tuned riffs against melody lines played with a sparkling, clean guitar tone. There are math rock odd measures and intricate syncopations that can shift into expansive post-rock sections.
Gloom boasts a terrific fat, hefty bass line that underpins some impressive soloing, but Hobart always keeps an eye on the underlying melody in his extrapolations. While the arrangements are rich and deep, there are big dynamic shifts in the music and an interest in opening out to explore different moods and textures.
