Touring involves long stretches of empty time between gigs and lots of ‘hurry up and wait’ on show days. Delving into a hard drive as he shuttled between cities and venues during 2020, Pat Metheny discovered a file stuffed full of tunes and ideas that he’d recorded over the years but had forgotten all about. Listening to them after all this time was a pleasant surprise. “I found that I had unintentionally gotten to a destination I had not planned for,” he says of his decision to release a compilation of that folder’s contents.
