A concentrated slab of psychedelic mysticism from ex-Guapo veterans. The second album from The Holy Family feels like both a distillation and intensification of their visceral, ritualistic trance rock. Yet there’s also a sense of emerging from darkness into light, and a journey having been completed by its end. Led by David J Smith, and featuring such luminaries as Kavus Torabi, Emmett Elvin and Thumpermonkey’s Sam Warren, THF are essentially a reconfiguration of Guapo, whose 2004’s Five Suns album is an avant-prog landmark – yet while Guapo could shoot off in multiple directions, THF are about developing a theme and building hypnotic layers of sound.
