HAZE RAMP UP THEIR SOUND

Eschewing their DIY approach, the 80s band recorded latest against the clock.

Chris McMahon of South Yorkshire prog-folk evergreens Haze has told Prog how the use of a top-class studio has taken their sound to new heights on new album, The Water’s Edge, while keeping the band’s essential spirit intact. “We always recorded at home, layering each part on top of the other, with unlimited time,” he says. “This time we just had 10 days, recording all together, and to me, it sounds alive and much more natural sounding.” It also emphasises the dynamic range of their sound: “Live, we’re much more Deep Purple than Pink Floyd.” A strong topical theme is evident on the anthemic call to arms, You’re Not Alone and the ominous The Waters Rising. “We’ve always had a strong green ethos,” says McMahon, “but the lyrics aren’t dictating; they’re…
