Signals 40th Anniversary UME/MERCURY
Trio’s first ‘keyboard album’ gets a deluxe reissue.
Rush scored their biggest commercial hit with 1981’s more streamlined Moving Pictures, and the following year’s Signals saw them going even further down the road they’d set out on with its predecessor. It marked the moment when synthesisers became a major component of their sound, a development that caused friction as Alex Lifeson felt, quite reasonably, that Geddy Lee’s synths were taking up space rightfully belonging to the guitar. There’s even a keyboard solo on Signals’ closing track Countdown, which everyone later agreed was a step too far.
