Flora Eallin IS IT JAZZ? Genre-defying suite blows in from Norway. The third album by the Tromsø duo of pianist Herborg Rundberg and guitarist Kristian Svalestad Olstad begins as a spectral, shimmering presence. But bolstered by the extra tonal colours of the brass-heavy, 10-piece group Nordnorsk Jazzensemble, events quickly thaw to become torrid in places. Originally commissioned to compose for the ensemble in 2021, Leagus crafted an interlacing suite of songs and pieces whose organic structures and empathetic arrangements are replete with an abundance of rich tones and stylistic directions that grow in all kinds of unexpected directions. With Flora Eallin translating as Plant Life, the music is variously ephemeral and vaporous, sometimes visceral and exotic.
