Equally in thrall to the electronic excursions of Yellow Magic Orchestra as they are to the sophisticated pop of The Blue Nile, with any number of 80s touchstones in between, Manchester’s Dutch Uncles return after an absence of six years.
In contrast to the in-your-face dynamics of 2017’s Big Balloon, here Dutch Uncles plump for a sleeker and somewhat smoother approach. While the attack of the rhythm section has been dialled back, as on the wedge-flicking sleekness of Exit Row and the title track’s throbbing pulses – the lyrics throughout feel as if they’re the result of an unsupervised cut-up technique gone seriously awry: check out Dead Letter’s ‘Can you give up that cow?/The timing caught…
