For Andy Jackson, 12 is the magic number. The illustrious Pink Floyd engineer’s upcoming solo record Twelve Half Steps is a concept album without a lyrical theme. It features 12 tracks, and each of these sees Jackson exploring one of 12 different ‘modal’ musical scales. “I liked the idea of setting myself limitations to work with,” Jackson tells Prog, adding that the idea was inspired by Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier, which featured preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys. This may sound baffling to anyone without a working knowledge of music theory, but Twelve Half Steps – out on May 26 through Esoteric – is as accessible as it is experimental.
