By the time the second night’s climax – a scorching version of Yes’ Starship Trooper – is wigging out wonderfully, these two shows celebrating Rick Wakeman’s preposterous, grandiloquent musical past have achieved something of a triumph. With a fine band, and oceans of music as vast and flowing as the renowned keyboard player’s capes, they’ve showcased why his untethered ambition and desire for scale dazzled so many in the mid-70s, taking his albums up the charts while insisting that nothing was impossible. Fashion may have taken umbrage against the records, but their best sections remain as inspired as they are faintly unhinged.
Nobody is more self-deprecating than Wakeman, who introduces each set with customary jollity. As The Six Wives Of Henry VIII…
