More epic melodrama from Sweden’s heaviest hearts. Barely a year after the release of Escape Of The Phoenix, Evergrey are ready to put us through the emotional wringer all over again. The Swedish power prog outfit have been in devastating form since 2014’s Hymns For The Broken, as their blend of cutting edge, heavier-than-Metallica riffing and frontman Tom S Englund’s unerringly heartfelt and heart-rending melodies slipped into a higher gear. To some extent, A Heartless Portrait is more of the same, but there are plenty of subtle embellishments that mark these songs out as distinctive in their own right. Save Us is the perfect, bombastic opener, with a skyscraper-levelling chorus and, as ever, startling levels of heaviness.
