French guitarist mixes melancholic moods and prog metal. Gabriel Keller crafts elegant, melancholic prog rock on his debut album. Although he names The Beatles and Pink Floyd among his influences, Clair Obscur feels closest in spirit and sound to another acknowledged inspiration, Porcupine Tree. Four different singers – Emi B, Charlotte Gagnor, Maïté Merlin, and Marine Poirier – all handle the lead vocals, avoiding the common pitfall of the prog solo songwriter who can’t carry a tune. The opening songs set a sombre mood, with the reflective vibe of Time, Train To Resolution and Open Arms. These tracks wear their prog influences lightly, but there’s a maturity and sophistication to the writing and arrangements that’s immediately appealing.
