French soundtrack composer embraces pop-prog with an all-star guestlist.

AS THE SON of Noëlle and Michel Lalu of 70s French band Polène, Vivien Lalu was born into prog. “It’s true,” he says with a laugh. “When my mother was pregnant with me she was playing a Minimoog onstage, and I guess that was a prenatal influence. Prog was my parents’ life, and it’s mine, too.” Awash with high-profile guests, the third studio album to bear Lalu’s surname, Paint The Sky, marks a radical departure from its predecessors.
