The Japanese quartet aiming to bring their blend of prog, pop and traditional music to the wider world.

Japanese quartet Jyocho started out in 2016 as a solo project by guitarist Daijiro Nakagawa, but like their name – which carries concepts of growing, learning and reacting – the group soon expanded. From Kyoto, Nakagawa is joined by vocalist/keyboardist Netako Nekota, bassist Sindee and flautist Yuuki Hayashi. Their latest album Let’s Promise To Be Happy, on No Big Deal Records, illustrates their blend of prog, pop and traditional genres along with influences from around the world. “The general public in Kyoto gravitates towards K-pop,” says Nakagawa. “But we have a venue here called Growly, and there are many alt-rock and prog bands there. Prog has strong roots, but it’s a minor genre yet to reach the general public.” He admits that Kyoto’s“weaker in terms of mobilising fans” than Japan’s capital…
