When Thom Yorke sings, ‘Just gotta turn myself inside out…’ on Friend Of A Friend, it’s hard to shake the feeling that he could well be referencing The Smile’s modus operandi when it comes to their songwriting. And while it’s always been so since Radiohead made the quantum leap from the alt rock of The Bends to the game-changing OK Computer and beyond, the two albums released by The Smile – 2022’s A Light For Attracting Attention and this year’s magnificent Wall Of Eyes – have also shown that this is no mere side-project but a band in their own right with a burst of creativity that leaves the day job in the shade.
