Three decades ago, no one would have predicted this. When Cynic released their full-length debut, Focus, in 1993, they were presented as the newest name in death metal, signed to Roadrunner Records and based in the scene’s capital of Tampa, Florida. However, the album was a celestial prog wormhole and the backlash forced the band to break up a year later.
Compare that outrage to today. Focus has become a seminal text in progressive metal, its layers of vocoder, experimental melodies and jazz-like drumming inspiring countless acts, yet have never been emulated. Tonight, Cynic are performing a once-reviled first impression in its entirety for its belated 30th birthday, and The Underworld is sold out for the spectacle.
