The Château d’Hérouville, an 18th-century house located on the northern outskirts of Paris, was one of the most prestigious studios of the early 1970s. It was there, in August 1972, that Tull began work on the follow-up to Thick As A Brick. “Cat Stevens and Elton John had recorded landmark albums there, so we assumed it’d be OK,” says Ian Anderson. “Little did we know…” Thick As A Brick’s transatlantic success had shifted things up a gear for Tull. There was talk of the band relocating to Switzerland for tax reasons, and Anderson rented an apartment in Montreux in preparation.
