“It’s always a goal for me to make something interesting from the beginning to the end, to make the listener travel, like a journey,” says Neige, frontman of Alcest. France’s blackgaze pioneers will release their seventh studio album Les Chants De L’Aurore on June 21 via Nuclear Blast.
“All the songs are completely different,” says Neige. “There is a track with just piano and vocals, the last track is very cinematic, the second-to-last is more like black metal, and we have this almost emo, very short post-rock track.” The dreamy shoegaze quality that Alcest is renowned for surfaces in the song Komorebi, named after the Japanese word meaning light falling through leaves. Despite the ephemeral quality behind that idea, Alcest haven’t cast off their formative metal influences.
