“It’s a bit bleak, but this is where the best art comes from: struggles,” says Marjana Semkina about her upcoming solo album Sirin. The title references a half-woman, half-bird creature in Slavic mythology: a harbinger of death and misfortune.
“It’s related to Greek sirens, it’s a little different in the way that all Slavic things are just darker,” says Semkina.
The vocalist’s solo debut Sleepwalking was released on Kscope in 2020, but now she’s gone independent, raising funds for Sirin through a Kickstarter campaign.
“It’s a very big endeavour for me; this entire album is very ambitious,” she says, “and what I’m doing with the merch is very difficult to carry alone. Financially it’s impossible.”
