El reinado de Isabel II pasará a la historia por varias razones: amén de ser el más largo –70 años– de la historia británica, la monarca se encargó de quitarle la solemnidad, no así la seriedad. La mística y el ceremonial reales se aderezaron con apertura y constantes acercamientos con sus súbditos. Ni las tragedias y escándalos familiares –que abundaron– pudieron disminuir su popularidad; y su muerte fue profundamente sentida por el pueblo británico.

INTERNACIONAL /GRAN BRETAÑA LONDRES.– Cuando el historiador británico sir Ben Pimlott empezó a trabajar sobre la biografía de Isabel II, en 1996, algunos de sus colegas se sorprendieron de que él considerara que la reina fuera digna de semejante labor de investigación. Se debe admitir que la decisión de Pimlott resultó atinada, pues hoy todo el mundo reconoce que su majestad marcó profundamente su época. El papel político de la monarquía ejerció una auténtica fascinación en el mundo artístico. En 2006 la película The Queen, de Stephen Frears, enfocaba el dilema que tuvo que enfrentar la reina después de la muerte de la princesa Diana; en 2013 la obra de teatro The Audience, de Peter Morgan, escenificaba sus reuniones semanales con sus sucesivos primeros ministros; la obra King Charles III…
